Sophrology

Sophrology is a method of relaxation and personal development that aims to harmonize the body and mind. It was developed in the 1960s by neuropsychiatrist Alfonso Caycedo. This approach is based on breathing, relaxation of the body and mind, as well as positive visualizations.

Its practice is used in various fields, such as health, education, sports, and personal growth. We present the basic principles, steps to follow, and benefits of sophrology sessions.

Principles of sophrology :

Sophrology is based on fundamental principles that allow for physical and mental relaxation, and achieving a modified state of consciousness :

  • Breathing : breathing is a key element of sophrology. By focusing on our breathing, deepening and lengthening it, we can relax and refocus on ourselves, manage stress and emotions.
  • Muscle relaxation : by focusing on relaxing our muscles progressively, we become aware of the tensions present, reduce them, and relax physically, reducing our stress levels.
  • Visualization : positive visualization involves focusing on positive images, places, people, or memories that are precious to us, which help us feel positive emotions, reinforce the positive impact they provide.

These positive thoughts and emotions help to strengthen self-esteem, confidence, and anticipate events in a more optimistic way.

Stages of sophrology :

Sophrology is practiced in individual or group sessions, guided by a sophrologist. The sessions are structured in several steps that allow for relaxation and well-being, which generalize through repetition.

These different phases are :

Sophrology deep breathing

  1. The preparation : before starting the sophrology session, it is good to prepare mentally and physically, by sitting comfortably in a calm and pleasant place, conducive to relaxation.
  2. Anchoring : once our position is chosen, sitting, standing, or lying down, we take the time to appreciate this position, feel our body in this pose, which allows us to stabilize, anchor, and begin to relax.
  3. Breathing : before starting muscle relaxation, we focus on our breathing, breathing progressively more slowly and deeply.
We can use our hands placed on our belly and chest to better perceive our respiratory movements.
  4. Muscular relaxation : then, we focus on each part of our body, from head to toe, to relax each muscle progressively, at the rhythm of our calm and peaceful breathing.
  5. The negative release : allows us to become aware of all the tensions and/or contrarieties that occupy us and let them go, chase them away from us, while exhaling.
  6. Visualization : visualization allows us to mentally represent positive images, such as a calm and serene place, or a positive situation, a memory, a project that is dear to us. This allows us to focus on positive events and remember, activate the pleasant sensations they provide.
Using our 5 senses during these visualizations allows us to feel emotions more intensely, but also to adapt to each person’s sensitivity.
  7. Reinforcement by positive : by using our positive thoughts and emotions, and focusing on our skills, qualities, and abilities, a positive thought, such as "love", "gratitude", or repeating positive phrases, we will gradually strengthen ourselves, improve our self-esteem, and confidence.

Are there any contraindications to practicing sophrology ?

Sophrology is a gentle, natural, and safe method that can be practiced at any age and regardless of physical condition. However, like any personal development practice, it may encounter some limitations :

  • Sophrology may not be suitable for everyone : although sophrology is a gentle method, some people may feel uncomfortable or have difficulty relaxing during sessions.
  • Results may vary from person to person, as we are all different, but this method is evolving and adapts to each person and situation.
  • Although focused on the positive, a sophrology session can bring up strong emotions that can destabilize.
  • Bringing relaxation, it allows for real relaxation, which can be assimilated to fatigue. Ideally, it is best to take this break time to integrate the benefits of the session.
  • Sophrology cannot replace medical treatment, it can be a support during follow-up, but cannot replace medical treatment prescribed.
